Leeds United happy to sell Charlie Cresswell as Millwall transfer update emerges from South East London

Leeds United may be “quite happy” to let Charlie Cresswell leave Elland Road, according to the South London Press journalist Richard Cawley.

The verdict comes despite the Whites having already witnessed the departures of defensive duo Luke Ayling and Djed Spence this month.

The former has made a loan switch to Middlesbrough, with the latter returning to parent club Tottenham following his loan.

“I think maybe Leeds might be quite happy to permanently let Cresswell go, but the reality for the player is that if he goes and does well on loan, it could expand however many options he’s got,” Cawley said on The South London Press Football Pod.

“I’m not saying for one second he wouldn’t want to come to Millwall, he had a really good loan, fans loved him. I think on the final day against Blackburn he came down even though he was injured, went out on the pitch, and so he really connected with the fanbase.

“So I’m not saying it’s something that couldn’t happen in the future, but I think for the foreseeable future, that one has gone, in this window. I’d be surprised if it happens, but I guess the caveat is never say never, because in the transfer window all of a sudden a deal can appear right, and other factors can happen such as injuries. I’m not saying it won’t happen, but that’s the state of play as I understand it.”

Another defensive exit?

Millwall were clearly interested in the signature of Cresswell this month, having made a couple of “big offers” for their former loanee [South London Press, 19 January].

But having failed to lure the youngster back to the club, they have now turned to Tottenham’s Japhet Tanganga, who they have temporarily snapped up until the end of the season.

Leeds have had plenty of joy in loaning a defender from the North London club, with Joe Rodon currently on a season-loan long at Elland Road from Tottenham.

And his regular presence in Daniel Farke’s side has meant minutes have been hard to come by for Cresswell, who perhaps should force through an exit in order to secure more minutes on the pitch.

The Whites have lost two right-backs this month in Ayling and Spence, but young star Archie Gray is more than capable of holding down that role, while Cresswell is a central defender, and so Farke could be tempted into letting him go for the remainder of the campaign.
