Leeds United frontrunners to sign Callum Wilson after Newcastle twist

Callum Wilson has emerged as a big-name target for Leeds United after promotion to the Premier League.

The Newcastle star has struggled with injuries in recent years, and looks to be on the move this summer with his contract expiring at St James’ Park.

Joel Piroe may have won the Championship golden boot with promotion, but Patrick Bamford and Mateo Joseph are facing serious questions over the step up.

Developments at Newcastle with Wilson look to be helping Leeds, though.

Leeds United frontrunners for Wilson deal

According to talkSPORT, the Whites are now favourites to sign the England international.

The radio station states it would be an “ambitious” deal to get over the line in West Yorkshire, with a free transfer now on the cards.

Newcastle do have an option to extend the contract of Wilson in a small twist, but it is said that they are happy for him to move on to another club.

Wilson is Premier League proven

Leeds are trying to stop the trend of promoted clubs being immediately relegated, with the past six all facing the same fate.

Leicester and Southampton went for some rogue transfers last summer, with Ipswich only really targeting the Championship again for their big-money signings.

The Whites seem to be going down a different route already, with Wilson not the only experienced Premier League head linked with Elland Road.

Liverpool duo Kostas Tsimikas and Caoimhin Kelleher are also on the radar of the 49ers and Leeds, showing a completely different approach.

Wilson has hit double figures twice in the past five seasons in the Premier League, scoring 47 goals in 111 appearances, while being hit by injuries.

The England international knows where the back of the net is and could be a sensational signing, with the lack of transfer fee somewhat making it a risk worth taking.

Daniel Farke will likely have the final say, but it’s great to see work getting underway already.
