Leeds United fail to agree fee for Wilfried Gnonto after Saturday conference call, Andrea Radrizzani wants him

Andrea Radrizzani is on a mission to sign the first Italian player of his ownership at Leeds United and is pushing to land FC Zurich’s Wilfried Gnonto, according to Alfredo Pedulla.

Writing via his personal website in an update on Sunday (21 August), the Gazzetta dello Sport journalist reported that a conference call was held on Saturday (20 August) between Leeds and Zurich.

However, it is understood that no agreement has been reached with a £2.5million gap, plus add-ons, in negotiations.

Leeds are reportedly offering £4.2million for 18-year-old Gnonto, who became Italy’s youngest ever goalscorer earlier this summer with a goal against Germany in the UEFA Nations League.

Pedulla adds that Serie A new boys Monza are also keen on Gnonto and could make a move for the Italy forward in the last few days of the transfer window.

Not happening

If Leeds really wanted Gnonto then they would surely just pay up the difference and sign the young forward?

Or, Victor Orta is simply waiting it out because his contract at Zurich expires next year and surely they would rather sell up this summer instead of letting him go on a free transfer next year?

Gnonto is too good for Zurich.

Sure, they’re the Swiss champions and they’re playing in Europe this season.

However, they’ve started this season terribly by losing in Champions League qualifying and failing to win any of their first five Swiss Super League fixtures.

Gnonto is an Itlay international and Italy internationals play in major European leagues.

We have nothing against a young player making it in one of Europe’s smaller leagues – at the end of the day Mohamed Salah made a name for himself at Basel in Switzerland.

However, it’s clearly time for him to move on and we doubt he’ll sign a new contract in Zurich.

If Leeds are going to sign Gnonto this summer, it’ll probably be a later August swoop.

But we just doubt it’s going to happen.
