Leeds United eye transfer as Ben Godfrey twist emerges

Leeds United want to sign Atalanta defender Ben Godfrey, who left Everton in the summer, according to TBR.

The news outlet reported on 16 December that a potential transfer to Elland Road for the 26-year-old will be possible only in the summer, provided the Whites secure promotion back to the Premier League.

Leeds United may sign a new centre-back in the summer

Joe Rodon and Struijk are currently the best two available centre-backs at the club but Leeds may look to enter the market if they are playing top-flight football next season.

Ethan Ampadu is out with an injury until 2025 and even if he returns to his best, the Whites will want someone who’s got significant experience of playing in the Premier League.

Having left Everton for £11million in June, Godfrey not got adequate game time in Italy and could move to Elland Road if he’s promised minutes.

He would be an excellent signing for Leeds if they achieve promotion due to his versatility and Premier League experience.

His ability to play as a centre-back, left-back, or right-back offers tactical flexibility, allowing the Whites to adapt to different game scenarios without weakening their defence.

The Englishman’s experience in the Premier League means he understands the intensity and expectations of top-tier football, which is invaluable for a newly promoted side aiming to stay up.

Godfrey’s athleticism and defensive acumen could significantly bolster Leeds’ backline, providing both depth and quality.

In other Leeds United news, a first-team ace is unlikely to play the full 90 minutes until the end of 2024 after what happened recently.
