Leeds United eye Josip Brekalo, Wolfsburg open to loan-to-buy transfer

Wolfsburg are open to letting Croatia international Josip Brekalo leave on a loan-to-buy basis this summer amid interest from Leeds United, according to CalcioMercato.

The Italian news outlet reports that Fiorentina, Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid are also keen on the 23-year-old forward.

It is understood that Wolfsburg would be willing to sell Brekalo for £15.3million this summer and at this stage, Atletico are in pole position to sign him.

Attacking reinforcements

Marcelo Bielsa loves a wide player, doesn’t he?

We’ve already signed Jack Harrison on a permanent basis this summer but the exit of Ezgjan Alioski does mean that we’re one player lighter on the wings.

Brekalo is a forward who can play on either side of the attack but last season, as per stats by transfermarkt, he made 22 of his 29 Bundesliga appearances as a left-winger.

The ex-Dinamo Zagreb ace scored seven goals and supplied three assists in his league appearances for Wolfsburg last term.

He struggled at the European Championships though, starting just one match for Croatia and being overlooked for their only win of the tournament.

Still, Brekalo is a player who’d excite us.

According to the Bundesliga website, the attacker has been described as “Croatia’s Arjen Robben” and a player with “pace, nifty feet and eye for goal, coupled with his pint-sized stature, all make for one tricky customer”.

You know what to do, Victor Orta.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites are close to signing a new goalkeeper for the first team.
