Leeds United exit breaks down after deal agreed and medical successfully passed

Charlie Cresswell’s proposed exit from Leeds United has broken down based on a failure to agree personal terms, according to Adam Pope.

The BBC journalist reported via Twitter on 1 July that the 21-year-old’s departure had been agreed between the Whites and Toulouse and the medical had not thrown up any issues.

It is therefore believed that a contract for the centre-back could not be settled on in France, but ultimately his departure is now not happening.

Cresswell had already travelled to the Ligue 1 side on Sunday 30 June and his sale for a fee of £3.8million was expected to be recorded as pure profit back at Elland Road [BBC Sport, 1 July].

Charlie Cresswell stays at Leeds United as Archie Gray is set to go

Exits from Daniel Farke’s squad have unfortunately been the order of the day since the 1-0 defeat to Southampton in the play off final condemned the club to another season in the Championship.

Cresswell’s would be a disappointment considering big things were expected of him in West Yorkshire as recently as a year ago.

But with Archie Gray seemingly on the brink of a move to Tottenham [The Athletic, 1 July], with Joe Rodon coming the opposite direction, the major star departure looks to be arguably the one fans would have least wanted to see go.

How many more players will leave before new arrivals start to come in to restock for another go at Premier League promotion remains to be seen.

Cresswell was a surprise target for AC Milan during the January transfer window [Fabrizio Romano via Kick, 1 February] amid a season which saw his opportunities extremely limited under Farke.

The relationship doesn’t appear to have been the easiest between the two, so despite the possible departure of Liam Cooper it looks like there isn’t a suitable place for the youngster in the Whites squad going forward, dependent on another club matching his asking price.
