Leeds United: Ethan Ampadu stays at home from Chelsea tour to seal transfer

Ethan Ampadu will stay home from Chelsea’s pre-season tour to the USA after Leeds United opened talks to bring the Blues’ academy player to Elland Road this summer, according to South Wales Echo [page 35].

The South Wales Echo shared that an opening bid had been made by Leeds United on 18 July, but it has separately been reported that the Yorkshire side have had an offer accepted by Chelsea for £7million + £3million in add-ons [Nizaar Kinsella, The Evening Standard, 17 July].

It is reported that Ampadu did not travel with the rest of the squad to the United States, despite having been included in the squad, as a deal draws closer to completion for the player who has spent each of the last four seasons out on loan.

A good deal for all parties

This is a deal that makes a lot of sense for everybody involved. Ampadu was once seen as the next big thing out of Chelsea’s academy, but his career has stalled in recent years, and a permanent move off the back of four loan moves will provide a fresh start.

Leeds United are getting a player who is still highly regarded, for a low fee. That sort of deal is never one to turn your nose up at, especially given he will count towards registration rules as a homegrown player.

From a Chelsea perspective, selling a player who has made just 12 appearances for the club for a decent fee still seems a good piece of business as they look to trim what has become an inflated squad.

Ampadu will relish the chance to play for Leeds United in the Championship, and his versatility could play a big part for the club, as he can play in midfield, at centre-back, or even as a full-back if necessary. Given the schedule of a Championship season, it’s likely he’ll need to be utilised in more than one position.
