Leeds United: David Ornstein shares what he’s heard about potential Wilfried Gnonto January transfer exit

David Ornstein has shared an update on the future of Wilfried Gnonto at Leeds United during the January transfer window.

The Italy international handed in a transfer request during the summer window to try and push through a move to Everton, but the 49ers held firm and refused to sell him.

Gnonto has found himself out of the team under Daniel Farke leading to speculation he could look to leave again, but while answering a fan question during a Q&A on The Athletic website (4 January), Ornstein admitted he’s not heard of that being the case for now.

“Had no info to this effect so far, Phil,” he wrote.

“Clearly isn’t getting the minutes he would like but he has still played 20-odd games and I don’t see Leeds wanting to risk weakening themselves as they push for promotion.

“We all saw what happened last summer and since things got patched up, I haven’t yet heard more rumblings of a move.”

Positive

Most people were probably expecting to hear about Gnonto looking to head out once again, and there have already been reports of a move to Italy being on the cards.

Roma have been linked with a move with reports suggesting that the winger has asked to leave with the club supposedly open to a sale more now than they were in the summer.

But letting Gnonto go mid-season with a promotion charge hardly going exactly to plan would be a huge risk and one that Daniel Farke is unlikely to be a huge fan of considering what he has said previously.

With that said though, if a club come in with a serious offer for the young winger it would surely be considered more than they did previously because it’s now clear that he is not as important to the starting team as he was at one point.

It’s good to hear that there are no issues going on behind-the-scenes right now regarding this, and hopefully when we get to the end of the window the situation is still the same.
