Leeds United could strike late-summer deal to re-sign Joe Rodon as transfer news emerges

Leeds United might not re-sign Joe Rodon until later in the summer transfer window, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

The newspaper reported via their website on 15 June that a new deal to sign the Tottenham defender, 26, is a possibility after he impressed on loan at Elland Road in the 2023/24 Championship season.

Rodon’s loan has since expired, leaving Daniel Farke short of defensive options. But the YEP maintains that a fresh agreement is on the cards.

Leeds United cannot afford to wait around for Joe Rodon

There’s no denying that Rodon was one of Leeds’ best players last season as they reached the Championship play-off final.

The Wales international made 50 appearances in all competitions for the Yorkshire club and hadn’t missed a league game since the 3-1 loss to Southampton back in September.

The issue with signing players on loan is that it’s all short-term planning. Leeds needed a new centre-back when they signed Rodon but the Welshman was always going to be a stop-gap instead of being someone who’ll stay at Elland Road on a long-term basis.

Fortunately, he seemed to enjoy life at Leeds and there is a chance that an agreement could be struck with Spurs to take Rodon either permanently now or on loan with an option to buy him next year.

They shouldn’t just seek out another straight loan deal.

There’s also the worry that Rodon heads elsewhere having shown Premier League-level performances in the Championship.

Leeds can’t wait until later in the summer to sign Rodon. They need to sign a new centre-back – or two – in the meantime so they’re not left in a mad late rush to bring one in if Rodon heads elsewhere.
