Leeds United may sign Mason Holgate if Southampton pull trigger on deadline-busting transfer

Leeds United could turn their attentions to signing Everton ace Mason Holgate on deadline day to bolster their defensive options, according to Alex Crook.

Speaking to GiveMeSport (1 February), the talkSPORT report has suggested that Daniel Farke could look to bring in the versatile defender after seeing deals for other targets collapse this month.

Holgate is currently on loan at Southampton but has struggled for game time and a deal to see him leave and head elsewhere could happen before the 11pm deadline, with Crook suggesting Elland Road could be his destination.

“They tried for Chris Mepham, at Bournemouth, but that got rejected because they are short-handed, defensively, due to injuries,” he said.

“Mason Holgate is maybe one to still keep an eye on. I know he played for Southampton in the FA Cup last weekend, but he is not in their league team. I think he is one that could be let go and have his loan terminated if he gets the chance to go and play first-team football elsewhere.”

Wow

Leeds have been linked with a host of defensive targets during the January transfer window, but no deals have materialised for a number of reasons.

According to Crook a deal for Bournemouth’s Chris Mepham fell through due to injuries, while others have opted for different clubs instead. But Holgate would be an interesting one for sure.

Unfortunately Holgate hasn’t really featured at Southampton and if that’s because of an ability problem, then the chances of him helping at Elland Road are slim.

But he is capable of playing at centre-back or ar full-back on either side also, and with the team losing Djed Spence and Luke Ayling this month that could be vital.

A loan deal would be relatively easy to do, especially since Southampton are open to letting him leave his move early there, so this is certainly one to keep an eye on.
