Leeds United could face competition from Manchester United for Cody Gakpo in January

Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Manchester United could look into signing Leeds target Cody Gakpo during the January transfer window.

The Whites were on the verge of completing a shock deal on deadline day, before the Dutch international had a change of heart and opted to stay at PSV Eindhoven ahead of the World Cup later this year.

Leeds are expected to return for a deal during the winter window, but several other clubs are said to be interested and Romano told his Substack subscribers that Man United could be one of those to return after the international tournament is over.

“Cody Gakpo could be one to watch – we know he was really close to joining Leeds towards the end of the summer, and for Man United he was a serious option as well,” he said.

“They had good contacts with the player, he shares an agent with Erik ten Hag, and there is a feeling that English clubs will come back in for Gakpo in January.

“United know he could be an option, and how he performs in the World Cup could end up being important for his future.”

We already knew that Man United held an interest in Gakpo during the summer, with the player himself admitting he expected to join them up until the final week of the window.

When a deal wasn’t done on deadline day, many believed that was Leeds’ chance of getting him in gone because the top clubs would be circling during January too and his value is likely to skyrocket if he has a good World Cup with the Netherlands.

With Man United circling once again, and having the advantage financially and with the fact that they have European football and he had his heart set on joining them in the summer it makes Leeds’ chances even slimmer than previously.

But Victor Orta has proven in the past that he is a shrewd negotiator and the club have shown with the Brenden Aaronson deal in the past that they’re happy to negotiate outside of windows to get them done ahead of the curve.

It’s going to be tough to do and there will be plenty of rumours between now and then, but fingers crossed Leeds can get this one done.
