Leeds United close to PSR limits ahead of crucial transfer developments

Archie Gray’s move to Tottenham was “crucial” in resolving the Profit and Sustainability Rules issues at Leeds United, according to The Athletic.

The online source reported [3 September] that, with it being well known that Leeds were close to the EFL’s limit on allowed losses, the club earned £30million in pure profit [BBC Sport].

Gray, Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter all had their release clauses met during the summer transfer window, which saw a total of £105million made from those three sales.

Once the final whistle blew at Wembley, and Southampton had pipped Daniel Farke’s side to Premier League promotion last season, thoughts quickly turned to which players could be leaving.

Given Gray’s outstanding performances out of position at right-back, it would have been extremely difficult to keep hold of him if clubs came calling, especially with the release clause in his contract.

Of course, each of the players could have decided against their transfers at Elland Road, but that would have left the Whites in a tricky predicament, battling the risk of PSR breaches.

Football fans have seen just how brutal punishments from these breaches can be, with Everton deducted a total of eight points last season, and while they are Premier League rules, it’s the same idea.

With Leeds aiming to secure promotion at the second time of asking, doing so with a number points deducted at the beginning of the season would have cast a dark shadow over Elland Road.

There is no predicting which of the three stars would still be with Leeds if promotion had been clinched last season, but fans can no longer focus on that after several new signings in the summer transfer market.
