Leeds United close in on free agent transfer as Joshua Guilavogui image emerges

Joshua Guilavogui is one of the free agent midfielders Leeds United could move to sign, according to Leeds Live.

The news outlet reported on Friday [19 October] that the 34-year-old – who has previously played in Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga – is the latest free agent target under consideration by the club, having been pictured at Elland Road for the 2-0 win over Sheffield United.

Guilavogui left Mainz at the end of the season and has seemingly moved ahead of Francis Coquelin at the top of the free agent shortlist at Elland Road after images appeared on X [@smisles98, 18 October] of Guilavogui.

Leeds United ramping up search for new midfielder

It must feel like the summer transfer window all over again for Leeds supporters as each day brings with it a new player reportedly targeted to strengthen the midfield.

Daniel Farke is wasting no time searching for much-needed squad depth in the middle of the park, with Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev facing lengthy spells on the sidelines to leave only Joe Rothwell and Ao Tanaka as the side’s senior options.

Cheikhou Kouyate appeared nailed on to complete a move to Elland Road. However, the move collapsed in the final stages, and MOT Leeds News understands a failed medical forced the Whites to pull the plug.

Coquelin is another former Premier League midfielder who was invited to attend a trial at Thorp Arch [Fabrizio Romano] and, while fresh updates on the former Arsenal man are yet to emerge, Guilavogui has seemingly stolen the march to become the latest Leeds recruit.

The 34-year-old may not be the most glamorous name but his ability to play at centre-back and holding midfield is exactly what Farke needs, with the depth in central defence also running thin at Elland Road.

With a wealth of experience in Europe’s top leagues, Guilavogui should take to the Championship like a duck to water and would be the perfect stop-gap option for the Whites as he approaches the final years of his illustrious career.
