Leeds United caught in battle with Sheffield United to sign £15m midfielder Gustavo Hamer
Leeds United must act quickly if they want to sign Coventry City midfielder Gustavo Hamer this summer.
The Whites have been linked with the playmaker for the majority of the transfer window, with The Athletic journalist Phil Hay reporting on 9 August that they are still looking to sign him.
But Daily Mail journalist Tom Collomosse has since reported that Premier League side Sheffield United are also interested in signing the 26-year-old midfielder.
It would be a huge blow to Leeds if they couldn’t get a deal for Hamer over the line after they have been tracking him for much of the summer.
The main issue holding back any deal is the high transfer fee Coventry are seeking for him, with Collomosse claiming they want about £15million to consider letting him leave the club.
It’s no surprise, though, as he has received a number of plaudits as The Sunday Times journalist Rod Liddle referred to him as “brilliant” for his impressive performances in the Championship.
Since arriving at the CBS Arena from Dutch side PEC Zwolle in 2020, the midfielder has scored 19 goals and laid on 24 assists in 131 appearances for the club.
He was instrumental in helping the Sky Blues reach the Championship playoff final last season, having scored 11 goals and laid on 10 assists in 45 games across the campaign.

Despite the ongoing speculation around his future, Hamer has already added one assist his name this season after setting up Kyle McFadzean’s goal in his side’s 2-1 defeat at Leicester City on 6 August.
Foxes boss Enzo Maresca insisted after the game that Coventry have “probably best player in the Championship” in the Brazilian following his high-quality display at the Kind Power Stadium.
It’s that kind of form and consistency that has put Leeds and Sheffield United on high alert about the midfielder’s availability as he enters the final year of his contract.
But if the Whites are serious about signing him, then they have to act decisively to ensure he’ll be playing his football at Elland Road this season.
