Leeds United and Cheikhou Kouyate last-gasp transfer twist emerges

Leeds United are still to make a final decision regarding the signing of Cheikhou Kouyate on a free transfer, according to Ben Jacobs.

The Give Me Sport journalist reported on 11 October that claims made of it being a done deal amid reports of a medical being completed are not accurate, as things stand.

The Whites have discussed a short-term contract with the 34-year-old until the end of the season.

Jacobs wrote on X: “Leeds are exploring a deal to sign Cheikhou Kouyaté on a free transfer.

“Not a done deal as of tonight despite reports of a medical exam.

“Parties have discussed a short-term contract until the end of the season.

“Leeds will make a final decision soon.”

Leeds United must make a decision on signing Cheikhou Kouyate soon

The necessity for the Whites to decide soon is driven by the timing of the international break, which provides a strategic window for integrating new players.

During this period, many of Leeds’ players are away with their national teams, offering Kouyate an opportunity to train extensively with the remaining squad.

This time is crucial for him to adapt to Daniel Farke’s tactical system, understand the team’s dynamics and build fitness levels specific to the German’s demands.

Given the 34-year-old’s experience, his quick integration could prove invaluable, as Leeds are facing an injury crisis and are looking to bolster their midfield ahead of a crucial phase of the season.

Delaying the decision might mean losing this integration period, potentially affecting his readiness for upcoming matches.

Hopefully, if not Kouyate the club have someone better who’s ready to go and become an important first-team player.
