Leeds United have agreed a four-year contract with Ao Tanaka with the midfielder set to join the Whites with "immediate effect", according to Florian Plettenberg.

The Sky Sports Germany journalist reported via X on Thursday (29 August) that the versatile Fortuna Dusseldorf star will undergo a medical with Daniel Farke's side today ahead of his move to Elland Road.

Leeds will pay a fee in the region of £3.4million for the Japanese international, who will put pen to paper on a contract until 2028, as they look to bolster their ranks ahead of the Friday 30 August transfer deadline at Elland Road.

Will Ao Tanaka exit Fortuna Dusseldorf amid Leeds United transfer rumours?

While Leeds United supporters won't begin to get too excited before they see Tanaka in a Whites shirt, it seems as though everything is in place for Farke to make a much-needed addition to his midfield ahead of the transfer deadline.

The Whites have been in dire need of one or two midfield reinforcements for a while now having lost Archie Gray and Glen Kamara early on in the transfer window.

Although Ethan Amapdu and Ilia Gruev have been joined by Joe Rothwell, there is still a clear lack of depth and midfield cover in the Elland Road changing room which will have been a major cause for concern.

Over the course of a long Championship season, Farke is going to need multiple different options at his disposal if Leeds have genuine aspirations of winning promotion back to the Premier League this term.

Already, in the opening weeks of the campaign, Leeds have looked a little short on options when Gruev has partnered Ampadu at the base of midfield. Hopefully, the signing of Tanaka will add an extra dimension in the middle of the park.

While it isn't clear when this transfer could be announced, supporters shouldn't have to wait too much longer for some official confirmation from the club.
