Leeds United ace sees permanent exit transfer collapse after visit to proposed new club
Charlie Cresswell’s transfer from Leeds United to Toulouse has collapsed after he visited the club, according to Graham Smyth.
The Yorkshire Evening Post journalist reported via Twitter on 1 July that the Whites defender’s exit was off.
He indicated that there did not appear to be an issue between the two clubs involved in the deal but the move had “fallen down” after the 21-year-old’s visit to France.
The news comes as another homegrown Elland Road ace is expected to leave with Archie Gray heading for Tottenham [The Athletic, 1 July].
Charlie Cresswell exit from Leeds United is now off
It remains to be seen what the trigger for this deal to not be completed is since the deal was expected to be officially announced imminently after Leeds United had agreed a fee of around £4million with the French side [Leeds Live, 30 June].
The likelihood of Cresswell staying and becoming a fixture in Daniel Farke’s defence is still probably unlikely in light of the fact that the pair had a difficult relationship last season while the German gave the youngster few opportunities.
Joe Rodon is expected to return on a permanent deal as part of the negotiations that look set to send Gray to Spurs, and with Pascal Struijk returning from injury and Ethan Ampadu still in the squad, pending further transfer developments, it appears Cresswell’s time is up at Elland Road.
Having had a production loan at Millwall two campaigns ago it represents a disappointing set of developments for his development to have stalled and his future to seemingly be elsewhere.
But that will pale in significance to the blow that fellow academy product Gray’s exit will be to the fanbase after an excellent breakthrough season under Farke last term.
In other Leeds United news, an eight-figure transfer bid has been rejected for a player who “absolutely loves” the Whites.
