Leeds permanent exit on the cards for 24y/o in Jan, English club wants cut-price deal – report

Sunderland are in pursuit of Leeds United right-back Lewie Coyle as the League One club hope to strike a cut-price deal for the defender, according to the Sun on Sunday.

The newspaper reported on January 5 [print edition, page 61] that Black Cats boss Phil Parkinson has set his sights on the 24-year-old, who could be sold by Leeds this month.

It is understood that Coyle, who is currently on loan at Fleetwood, will be out of contract at the end of the season so the Whites might aim to offload him permanently this month while he is still on their books.

It has been pretty clear for a while that Coyle has no future at Elland Road.

He is halfway through his third season on loan at Fleetwood, who he has now made 120 appearances for across all competitions.

Not many players earn that number of appearances for a club they have never been contracted to and considering where Leeds are in comparison to League One Fleetwood, it is pretty clear that Coyle isn’t at the right level.

Sunderland could be a good move for him.

The North-East club needs a new right-back and he is bound to get plenty of game-time there as he is proven in his role in the third-tier.

If he does move on this month then we wish him all the best but it would not be a shock if he saw out his loan spell at Fleetwood and then joined them permanently for free in the summer.
