Leeds on brink of permanent 3-year signing with player entourage due at club within days: report
Leeds United are set to complete a deal for young keeper Illan Meslier in the next few days, according to French outlet Mercato.
The report claims that Leeds’ promotion has triggered the permanent deal and that the player’s entourage will arrive at Leeds within days to finalise the deal.
Mercato claims that Meslier, 20, will sign on a three-year deal.
Meslier has played 10 games for Leeds now – nine in the Championship and one, his debut, in the FA Cup against Arsenal in January.
This is great news for Leeds who look like they’re picking up a brilliant young keeper for just under £5m.
MOT Leeds News columnist Paul Robinson has said he’s heard very good things from the club about him, saying, “He’s very highly rated at Elland Road.”
The question over who’s going to be the number one for Leeds next season is still up in the air, though.
Kiko Casilla started against Derby and Leeds seem intent on riding out the outrage from fans.
Casilla was banned for eight games for racially abusing Charlton’s Jonathan Leko and has not apologised since he was found guilty.
Leeds backed him during the trial and by starting him at Pride Park have backed the player again. Meslier wasn’t even on the bench for yesterday’s game.
Given what’s happened we can’t see Casilla starting against Charlton. If he does it would seem that he’s still seen as the main keeper at Leeds.
If Meslier starts, as expected, it sets up a fight for the gloves for next season, although there are still a significant number of Leeds fans who don’t want Casilla to play for the club again.
