Leeds officials baffled by shock transfer news – Beren Cross

Leeds United officials are baffled by the transfer talk around Matt Targett, according to Beren Cross.

The Leeds United Athletic writer reported via X (30 January) that despite links with the Newcastle United defender, those on the inside at Leeds are surprised where the rumours have come from.

It was reported [The Athletic, 28 January] that the West Yorkshire outfit made an enquiry about Targett’s services with his current club prepared to let him leave for the right price [The Sun, 29 January].

Leeds United not expected to make Matt Targett move

Although Junior Firpo has now returned from injury, it was not a surprise to see the Whites linked to the left-back during the transfer window as Firpo is out of contract at the end of the season and talks over a new contract are yet to be opened.

Furthermore, with Daniel Farke looking towards automatic promotion with his Leeds team this term, any reinforcements in the side will only be a bonus.

Since suffering with injury, the 29-year-old has struggled to get game time in the North East and has made just one Premier League appearance so far this season.

That being said, there is no doubt that Targett is a very capable defender and, if called upon, he would likely fit very comfortably into a top Championship side.

It seems as though this one is off the cards as those at Elland Road are uncertain where the noise came from. However, if the manager did want to make a late bid, the Whites could certainly do worse than recruit Targett before the closing of the transfer window.
