Leeds make enquiries for Liverpool full-back Neco Williams
Leeds United have approached Liverpool with enquiries about wantaway full-back Neco Williams, according to Goal.
The football news website reports that Southampton are leading the race to sign the 20-year-old Wales international but face competition from Leeds, Wolves, Burnley, Aston Villa and Norwich.
It is understood that Champions League side Liverpool are ready to sell Williams for £10million with the Welsh ace looking to quit Anfield in search of more game-time.
£10million is a lot
Williams is quite an inexperienced player for Leeds to throw £10million at considering he’s only ever played 25 times for the Liverpool first-team.
The Wrexham-born full-back, who can play at right-back mainly but has also featured at left-back, has also played 13 times for Wales.
Leeds do need to bolster their full-back options this summer, especially on the left side of the field. But they would probably be better off investing that money in a natural left-back rather than signing a right-back who can also play on that side.
Williams played as a left-sided wing-back for Wales on Sunday when they lost to Italy in the European Championships.
However, for his club, he’s mainly played at right-back in a back-up role behind Trent Alexander-Arnold.
There’s no doubt that Williams will have learned a lot from playing in the shadow of the England international and we feel Marcelo Bielsa can improve him a lot too.
But Luke Ayling had a good season at right-back and we have Cody Drameh coming through, as well as Stuart Dallas being able to play in that position.
We don’t really need Williams, which is perhaps why Goal claims Southampton are leading the race to sign him.
In other Leeds United news, a former Elland Road player wants the Whites to sign this available goalkeeper to replace Kiko Casilla.
