Leeds make approach for Ivory Coast international - French journalist

Leeds United have approached Lyon with an enquiry about Ivorian attacker Maxwel Cornet, according to French journalist Manu Lonjon.

The former Eurosport reporter, who now works as a freelancer, said on his personal Twitter account on Friday that Leeds have enquired about Cornet’s situation at Lyon.

Lyon crashed out of the Champions League with a 3-0 defeat to Bayern Munich on Wednesday night with 23-year-old Cornet playing all 90 minutes.

The Ivory Coast international scored six goals and supplied five assists in 38 appearances across all competitions for Lyon and has now emerged on the radar of newly-promoted Leeds as Marcelo Bielsa eyes reinforcements for his attack.

Sky Sports Italy journalist Gianluca Di Marzio reported earlier on Friday that Leeds want to add two new attackers to their squad this summer while Sky Sports’ Tim Thornton has claimed that “we could see [Leeds] add another winger”.

Cornet can play on both sides of the attack so could be a handy addition for Bielsa, who likes to have plenty of wide options in his squad.

But the former Metz star can also play at left-back or left-sided wing-back and has done on plenty of occasions for Lyon in the last year [WyScout].

Bielsa likes to play with attack-minded full-backs and Cornet would certainly fill that role at Elland Road if Leeds can strike a deal.

Unfortunately, striking a deal could prove very tricky.

Lyon seems like a good place to be at the moment with them reaching the Champions League semi-finals and Cornet’s goal against Manchester City in the quarter-finals might suggest to him he should be playing regularly for a top European club.

As big as Leeds are, would Cornet be willing to ditch the French giants to join a newly-promoted team in the Premier League?

It’s going to be a hard sell, that’s for sure.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites have tabled an offer for this Dutch attacker.
