Leeds loan-to-buy deal on the cards for new centre-mid – Phil Hay

Leeds United could bring in a new central midfielder before the domestic transfer window but it would have to be on an initial loan, according to The Athletic journalist Phil Hay.

Leeds came close to signing Michael Cuisance on a permanent basis from Bayern Munich last week before the French midfielder failed a medical in England.

Marcelo Bielsa and Victor Orta, undeterred by the disappointment of Cuisance’s failed medical, went out and signing Raphinha in a £17million deal from Rennes on deadline day’

However, Raphinha is a right-sided winger and Cuisance is a central midfielder so Leeds could still feel as though their central options need to be bolstered.

According to former Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Hay, Leeds have used up the bulk of their transfer budget now and if they do sign anyone else before the domestic window closes on October 16, they will have to seek an initial loan deal first.

“My understanding is if they do anything in this window and if they do manage to find themselves a centre-mid who’s agreeable and they want to take on, then it’s likely to be done on loan with a future option or obligation [to buy] as oppose to cash up front,” said Hay on The Phil Hay Show podcast.

Do Leeds need another central midfielder? It certainly wouldn’t hurt.

Pablo Hernandez is 35-years-old and has suffered regularly from short-term spells on the sidelines with injuries while Adam Forshaw has also been out of action for over a year.

Mateusz Klich is also 30-years-old now so Leeds could maybe do with some fresh, younger legs in that area of the squad.

Signing them on loan with an option to buy would be clever business too but we would imagine that any selling club would want the permanent deal to be mandatory due to the way the coronavirus pandemic has hurt the economical side of football.

In other Leeds United news, Hay’s shared a huge financial update on the Whites with a £30million deal agreed behind-the-scenes.
