Leeds-linked Nahitan Nandez can leave Cagliari once they secure Serie A safety
Negotiations for Leeds United target Nahitan Nandez can begin once Cagliari secure their Serie A status, according to Centotrentuno.
The Italian news outlet claims there is a “verbal promise of a sale” that will be on the table once his current club confirms their survival, something that looks imminent after their 0-0 draw with Fiorentina on Wednesday pushed them five points clear of the drop zone with two games remaining.
They play again on Sunday.
Lazio are named as an interested party alongside Leeds who have a “lively interest” in the Uruguayan midfielder who has a £30.9million release clause.
Centrotrentuno claim that the Whites made an “important economic proposal” last August, while West Ham also made an offer in January 2020.
Cagliari, however, are said to be unlikely to entertain “normal offers”, particularly from a club that is not considered among the elite.
Nandez has been integral in Cagliari’s end-of-season push for survival that has seen them go unbeaten in their last six games and they could guarantee their Serie A status before the final matchday on May 23.
They’ve won four in that recent run while Nandez scored a vital 94th-minute equaliser versus Napoli on May 2.
He has started every single game for them since January 31 when he was forced to sit out a clash with Sassuolo due to a suspension he was serving.
The 25-year-old’s versatility would be a great asset with his ability to play anywhere in midfield, but if Cagliari aren’t going to lower their demands down much from his hefty release clause fee, then the Whites might walk away.
£30.9million is a big sum for someone who hasn’t scored more than twice in a league season for Cagliari, and with Kalvin Phillips situated as the more defensive-minded midfielder Nandez would likely play further forward.
There also seems to be a big queue for his signature so it could be a tough deal to broker this summer.
