Leeds in pursuit of 96-cap Man United player who has no place at Old Trafford - report

Leeds United are in pursuit of Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero, according to Argentinean TV station TyC Sports.

TyC Sports show Presion Alta aired a feature on the Argentine players who Marcelo Bielsa would like to sign for his Leeds side in the summer and it is understood that Romero, 33, is one of them.

A screenshot of the show on Presion Alta’s Twitter account claims that Romero has “no place” at Old Trafford and is “targetted” by Leeds.

Kiko Casilla’s future at Leeds is in doubt after being hit with an eight-match ban for racism earlier this season.

Although the Spanish goalkeeper started against Derby on Sunday, it would still be a surprise if he wasn’t moved on this summer as he’s in the last year of his contract at Elland Road and never fully convinced fans in the Championship.

Romero is one of – if not the – best back-up goalkeepers in the Premier League.

He’s not made a league appearance this term due to David De Gea holding down the number one spot at Old Trafford but the 96-times Argentina international has still played 15 times in other competitions and kept an impressive 11 clean sheets.

Of course, those clean sheets have come against lesser sides but he cannot choose who he plays against and we can only judge him on those appearances this term.

Leeds may well be signing Illan Meslier permanently from Lorient when his loan ends but we would be more than happy to see Romero come in as the new number one and Meslier as his understudy.

In other Leeds United news, Adrian Durham has suggested a move to Leeds for this big-money Manchester City player.
