Leeds United are leading the race to sign Stuttgart and Argentina centre-forward Nicolas Gonzalez, according to the Mirror.
The newspaper claims that Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Roma, Lazio and Napoli are also interested in signing the 22-year-old striker but due to the pull of playing for Marcelo Bielsa, Leeds are favourites to strike a deal.
It is understood that Bielsa feels Gonzalez has “all the attributes” to be able to take the Premier League by storm after firing Stuttgart to promotion to the Bundesliga last season by scoring 14 goals in 27 league appearances.
Stuttgart are said to be resigned to losing Gonzalez.
German magazine Kicker has previously reported that the former Argentinos Juniors striker is valued at £18.2million.
If Gonzalez arrives at Elland Road, he would no doubt be Bielsa’s marquee signing of the summer because no one is seriously expecting Leeds to splash the cash on a whole host of new faces.
However one area that definitely needs a new face is the striker position as Patrick Bamford is the only out-and-out striker in the senior squad as it stands.
Of course, there is the small matter of Jean-Kevin Augustin and if Leeds are forced into signing the striker permanently from RB Leipzig, that could have an impact on any potential deal for Gonzalez.
But, based on how both players performed last season, we would rather see Bielsa take a chance on the Argentina international who is attracting attention from some of Europe’s top clubs.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites are the only team with “serious” interest in this centre-back.
