Leeds could still land Max Wober windfall yet as injury return nears

Leeds United would have been hoping to see Max Wober join Werder Bremen on a permanent deal in the summer.

However, things have not quite gone to plan for the loanee, who has made just one appearance for the German side.

The 28-year-old does not have a future at Leeds after falling out of Daniel Farke’s plans.

But injury has left him ruled out for much of the season so far, putting the prospect of the Whites receiving the £3.5million transfer fee from his buy option as just a slim chance.

However, the defender is now nearing a return, which could provide hope for those at Elland Road for a Leeds transfer.

What has Max Wober said about his injury?

In Wober’s first game for Werder Bremen, disaster struck as he sustained a hamstring injury that kept him out from August all the way to December.

He returned to the German club’s matchday squad on 20 December but was an unused substitute. However, he would later find misfortune once more, as Wober picked up another injury that has since kept him out.

While Wober is not fit just yet, he is positive about coming back into the fold sooner rather than later.

Speaking to Weser Kurier, Wober stated he is eyeing a return to action within the next two weeks.

He said: “Hopefully, after the international break, I’ll have at least five or six games where I can give my all for the club.”

Of course, his time to impress those at Weser Stadium has been dramatically reduced, but he could still push for that permanent deal with a strong few performances.

Leeds could find selling Wober difficult in the summer

Although Wober’s future lies away from LS11, it could be hard for the Peacocks to sell a player who spent most of a season injured.

There will not be many teams out there that are willing to take a risk in that scenario.

With Wober’s contract expiring in 2027, Leeds may end up having to keep the Austrian until his deal expires. Then, they will miss out on any funds coming in for the centre-back.

It is an extremely tough situation, and the Elland Road officials will be keeping close tabs on Wober’s return, hoping that he can force his way into the plans until the end of the season.

However, while that hope is there, the probability of Wober moving to Werder Bremen is slim.
