Leeds could do U-turn on Tyler Roberts future - Phil Hay

Leeds United could perform a U-turn on Tyler Roberts’ future at the club if he continues to impress in the Premier League, according to Phil Hay.

Last month, the Athletic journalist reported that Roberts, 22, could be in the firing line in the summer when it comes to upgrading the squad as Leeds will “move on from a small section of the Championship old guard“.

However, the Wales attacker has since been in good form and had what was arguably his best performance of the season on Saturday as the Whites drew 0-0 with Chelsea at Elland Road.

Speaking on the latest episode of The Phil Hay Show podcast, Hay suggested that Roberts’ future might not be as set in stone as first thought after he shone versus Chelsea.

“It was a better performance from him and more performances like that are going to put him in [Marcelo] Bielsa’s or Leeds’ mind when it comes to the summer and they think about how to redraw the squad again,” said ex-Yorkshire Evening Post reporter Hay.

“You would have to say, out of the two players floating around in that area – him and Rodrigo – it was Roberts who was the more impressive.”

A young man trying to prove his worth

Roberts has been criticised quite a bit during his spell at Leeds United.

Things didn’t get off to a great start when injury ravaged his arrival from West Brom in January 2018 but Bielsa has stuck by the young Welshman and turned him into a Premier League regular at Elland Road.

He found himself in and out of the team in the Championship with the odd superb display thrown in there but otherwise, he was a bit of an average player who wasn’t key to promotion and wasn’t a complete outcast either.

In the top-flight, his performances have been up and down but lately, there have been more strong displays than bad ones and that could save Roberts’ career at Leeds.

His contract expires at the end of next season so a decision must be made this summer on whether he should be offered fresh terms or offered out to other clubs.

At the end of the day, Roberts’ isn’t a main starter and is by no means a key player. But he’s still a young player who’s able to show a glimmer of hope.

He could be worthy of a new deal if he has a few more displays like the one against Chelsea.

In other Leeds United news, there’s been a major update on whether Luke Ayling is getting into the England squad.
