Leeds 24-year-old exit on the cards before 5pm tomorrow – reliable journalist

Conor Shaughnessy could leave Leeds United before the domestic transfer window slams shut at 5pm tomorrow (Friday), according to LeedsLive journalist Beren Cross.

Shaughnessy, 24, has been on the books at Elland Road since 2016 and although he has 15 senior appearances to his name at the Yorkshire club, his last appearance came in August 2018 when he played in a Carabao Cup defeat to Preston.

The ex-Ireland Under-21 international, who can play at centre-back or as a holding midfielder, has had loan spells away from Leeds at Hearts, Mansfield and, most recently, Burton.

He joined Burton in January and made eight appearances in League One before the league was curtailed early due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Brewers were reportedly expected to sign Shaughnessy at the end of that loan spell but with the enforcer still at Leeds, clearly the deal didn’t go through for whatever reason.

Writing in a Q&A on the LeedsLive website, Cross now claims that Shaugnessy, Jay-Roy Grot and Ouasim Bouy are three players who are still at Elland Road but have no future with the club.

Shaughnessy, however, is at least attracting attention from EFL clubs ahead of the transfer window closing in just under 24 hours’ time.

“Shaughnessy, Grot and Bouy are the three which stand out as contracted players with no prospect of playing for Bielsa,” said Cross.”

“For Shaughnessy, I understand there are EFL clubs interested and keen to take him before the window closes, but Leeds have not entertained anything formal yet.

“For Grot and Bouy it’s a mystery and if they were going to go anywhere I really thought it would have been abroad.”

Grot and Bouy serve as reminders of Victor Orta’s first summer at Leeds when he seemed to sign every single bang average player he could find in Europe.

The sooner those two leave, the better. Not just for Leeds but for their own careers.

At least Shaughnessy was getting regular first-team football while he was out on loan last season and you’d imagine that he has the attitude to be pushing towards another move away from Elland Road.

EFL clubs don’t have much time left to sign Shaughnessy but surely Leeds would agree a loan deal, even if it means the Irishman will leave for free next summer.

In other Leeds United news, this player is undergoing a medical.
