Kris Boyd makes Sammie Szmodics transfer plea after what he saw in Leeds United v Portsmouth
Leeds United should go and splash out on Blackburn Rovers Sammie Szmodics after Mateo Joseph “huffed and puffed” without impressing against Portsmouth, according to Kris Boyd.
The Whites started their new Championship campaign with an enthralling 3-3 draw at Elland Road, with Brenden Aaronson grabbing a late leveller before missing an even later sitter to win it.
Former Rangers striker Boyd, covering the game for Sky Sports Soccer Saturday (10 August, 2:40pm), thought Leeds lacked a central goal threat and thinks they should be looking to reinvest money from the sales of Archie Gray, Glen Kamara and Crysencio Summerville on Wales forward Szmodics as he wasn’t overly impressed by what he saw from Joseph.
“He (Summerville) is )a miss) but if you look at what? Kamara’s left, Summerville, Archie Gray’s left, you go right through the list, they’ve got money there why don’t you go and get a striker?
“You’ve got someone there, Sammie Smodzics, who’s scored the goals for Blackburn last year, can you go and get him?
“Because they created loads of opportunities but they never looked like scoring and it was all from (Willy) Gnonto or Dan James the good work from them. (Jayden) Bogle got forward, Junior Firpo got forward, they put balls in the box but Joseph in the middle huffed and puffed but there wasn’t anything really there.”
No need for Leeds United to panic
To say Leeds never looked like scoring when they scored three times is quite the hot take. On a different day, the Whites win this quite comfortably and it had all the hallmarks of a bonkers Championship opener.
So, look, yeah obviously you want to start with a win and you want your starting striker to be scoring, but there is a lot of hope with Joseph and this is only one game into a 46-match season.

Ultimately, there’s absolutely no need to pull the panic button. A couple of new faces would obviously be much welcomed and if there is a chance to do business for Szmodics then it might be a move the Whites should consider.
But, at the same time, you can’t help but feel like there should be a little patience exercised here, there’s absolutely need to hit the panic button. There were enough positives and, with a few tweaks, the wins are going to start flowing soon enough playing like that.
