Klopp ‘holds talks’ as Leeds United make approach for major summer deal

Jurgen Klopp is involved in transfer talks for one of Leeds United’s targets for the summer.

With only four games left to play in the Championship, Leeds are on course to secure automatic promotion to the Premier League this season.

While nothing is set in stone yet, the Whites are confident about avoiding further hiccups, as they are already planning for life back in the top flight.

It emerged earlier this week that Leeds have set their sights on signing Julian Weigl from Borussia Monchengladbach to strengthen their squad enough to compete in the Premier League.

Klopp holds ‘intensive talks’ with Weigl

Leeds United have already approached Weigl over a transfer to Elland Road as Farke looks to reunite with his former captain in England.

It has now emerged that the midfielder was recently spotted in Austria, where he met Klopp, the head of global soccer for Red Bull, who own a minority stake at the West Yorkshire outfit.

Klopp even held ‘intensive talks’ with Weigl over a transfer, according to Sky Austria.

However, it turns out the former Liverpool boss held negotiations on behalf of Red Bull Salzburg, with the broadcasters reporting via their website (16 April) that the Austrian giants’ managing director of sport, Rouven Schroder, was also present at the time.

The Germany international is contracted to Monchengladbach until 2028, meaning Leeds and Salzburg would have to pay a significant transfer fee to acquire his services.

He reportedly earns around £2.6-3million a year at the Bundesliga club, meaning his suitors would have to offer him a package worth over £200,000 a week.

Leeds United have advantage in Weigl transfer race

At 29 years of age, Weigl still has a few more years remaining in his playing career and it remains to be seen if he is willing to move to Austria at this stage.

On the flipside, Floriant Plettenberg of Sky Deutschland reported via X on 15 April that the German would only consider a move to the Premier League.

That means Leeds would be in the front seat to sign the former Benfica ace if they earn promotion.
