Kaveh Solhekol knows for fact Tottenham really want Daniel James, Leeds United signing would force change

Kaveh Solhekol knows for a fact that Tottenham want to sign Daniel James from Leeds United before the summer transfer window closes at 11pm on Thursday.

James, 24, has been strongly linked with Tottenham in recent days with Sun journalist Alan Nixon reporting via his Patreon account on Sunday (28 August) that an unsuccessful loan-to-buy bid has been made by Spurs to sign the Welsh international.

Solhekol claims that Leeds don’t want to sell James but if they’re successful in signing either PSV’s Cody Gakpo or Wolves’ Hwang Hee-chan, that could change.

Speaking on Sky Sports News’ Transfer Show on Wednesday (31 August, 05:26pm), Solhekol said: “The situation is that Tottenham have had a long-standing interest in Dan James. He’s a player Antonio Conte likes a lot. This interest has been throughout the summer.

“But as far as Leeds are concerned, they don’t want to sell the player. The situation may change depending on who they bring in. We know, for instance, they’re interested in Cody Gakpo. We know they’re interested in Hwang Hee-chan at Wolves as well.

“If either of those players were to come in, given the transfer fee and the wages, the situation regarding James might change. But then it’s up to the player what he wants to do.

“It is a very complicated situation but we know for a fact Spurs like this player a lot, they’ve liked him a lot for a very, very long time.”

Mike Wedderburn added: “And they can offer him Champions League football.”

Let him go?

If Leeds have the chance to sign Gakpo but it depends on James leaving, they should let the Wales international go – even if it’s for a reduced fee.

But if they’re going to let James go to sign Hwang from Wolves then forget about it – he’s not good enough.

Jesse Marsch has managed Hwang at both RB Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg and we’ve seen so far this season that the American is getting varying degrees of success in signing his former players.

Brenden Aaronson is getting on brilliantly, Tyler Adams has been decent and Rasmus Kristensen has unfortunately struggled.

Hwang, though, has had a season in the Premier League with Wolves and struggled badly so we really don’t want to see Leeds making a move for him when he’s a downgrade on James.

Gakpo, however, would be a different beast and we’d love to see him at Elland Road wearing the white of Leeds United.

James hasn’t had an amazing start to life at Leeds and if he does stay, we’ll back him and hope he can get on track because if you cast your minds back, Patrick Bamford and Jack Harrison also both had tough first seasons with the Yorkshire club.
