Kalvin Phillips to assess options next month as Leeds United exit mooted
Leeds United star man Kalvin Phillips will assess his options next month after being linked with a mega-money move away from the club, according to the Daily Mail [May 25].
The England international has been linked with a move to a club near the top of the table with Man City [Telegraph], Tottenham [Telegraph] and Manchester United [MEN] this summer, with a £60m fee mooted.
However after the Whites were able to avoid relegation a new deal is expected to be put on the table too, with Phillips known to have wanted to stay at Elland Road having grown up as a fan of the club.
But after interest from several Champions League clubs emerged, the midfielder will now assess his options next month which could see the 26-year-old move on from his boyhood side.
Phillips has just 12 months remaining on his current deal and is known to earn way under his market value, but Leeds are expected to offer a considerable pay-rise to try and convince him to stay and extend his deal.
This has always been the fear for Leeds fans, that Phillips would be tempted to move away because there are some things the club just simply can’t offer him.
Champions League football and trophies are something that all professional football players will want in their career and it’s rare that a player is good enough to warrant that.
Phillips has proven he is of that level and calibre of player and Leeds are lucky to have held onto him for as long as they have.
Relegation would likely have made the decision easier, but after staying up the club will want to hold onto their star man in order to push on and progress up the table as best they can.
But if the player opts for a new challenge at a higher level, nobody can begrudge him that move and we will wish him well for the future.
