Kalvin Phillips’ stance on Elland Road return shared as Leeds United eye January deal

Kalvin Phillips could make a stunning return to Leeds United in January.

Despite Leeds’ 4-3 defeat to Newcastle on Wednesday, the Whites are still on course for another season in the Premier League.

Daniel Farke’s men have an eight-point advantage over West Ham and will be looking to increase that over the coming weeks.

However, their ability to do that may hinge on any business they can do in January, with Phillips one of those linked with a move to Elland Road.

Kalvin Phillips exit update alerts Premier League clubs

Phillips was a hero at Leeds before he joined Man City, where his career has since spiralled, mainly due to injuries and a lack of gametime.

However, the Englishman is in line to find a new club this January, with Man City willing to consider an exit in the coming weeks.

According to Joe Donnohue via FourFourTwo, he would be open to joining Leeds United, but it’s claimed to be unlikely that the Whites pursue a deal at this stage.

Anton Stach and Sean Longstaff have shone for Leeds in the Premier League, with the likes of Ethan Ampadu and Ao Tanaka all showcasing their worth.

That stance may change in the coming weeks, though it may require Phillips to drop his wage demands.

Wolves are also said to hold an interest, as they look to reinforce their squad to achieve what would be a miraculous comeback if they were to avoid relegation.

Pep Guardiola has previously had to apologise to Phillips

Phillips was destined to be an England regular based on the form he showcased with Leeds, but his move to Man City changed everything.

Despite joining in 2022, Phillips has made just 54 appearances for Man City, showcasing the struggles he has faced when it comes to staking a claim for his starting place.

That lack of gametime has been acknowledged by Pep Guardiola, who publicly apologised to the 30-year-old back in 2023.

“I feel so sorry for my decision for him,” Guardiola said. “I’ve said that many times.

“He doesn’t deserve what has happened to him, and I’m so sorry. “The only thing I can say about him is that I am asking for good personalities and characters, and he is a perfect example. And after that, I have to give him something, and I didn’t do that.

“It’s just because I visualise some things and visualise the team and things, and I struggle to see him.
