Kalvin Phillips ready to take drastic career action as Leeds United open talks over January loan

Kalvin Phillips could be forced into a massive career call if a loan move to Leeds United falls through.

Phillips was part of the Leeds squad that won promotion from the Championship under Marcelo Bielsa in the 2019-20 campaign.

The midfielder subsequently proved he was more than capable of making the step up to the Premier League, earning a £50million move to Manchester City after two seasons in the top flight.

However, Phillips’ time under Pep Guardiola has been nothing short of a disaster, with the former England international now set for an Etihad exit in the January transfer window.

Leeds enquire about Kalvin Phillips loan

With his time at Man City seemingly at an end, Leeds have shown an interest in re-signing Phillips in an attempt to aid their Premier League survival hopes.

According to the Daily Star’s print edition on Thursday, Daniel Farke’s side have enquired about bringing the midfielder in on loan for the second half of the season.

There is a potential stumbling block to the deal, though, with Leeds wanting Man City to make a significant contribution to Phillips’ £250,000 per week wages.

While a loan to Elland Road would make sense for the 29-year-old’s career, there is a real danger that the move could fall through if the two clubs cannot come to an agreement.

The report adds that, if Phillips is unable to seal a switch to Leeds in the January window, then he will have little other choice than to consider a move abroad as he attempts to revitalise his career.

While that would be a big step for someone who has spent their entire career in English football, his disappointing form over the past few years gives him no alternative.

Kalvin Phillips has struggled in recent seasons

Phillips had an unsuccessful loan spell at Ipswich Town last season, off the back of a dismal six months at West Ham in the second half of the 2023-24 campaign.

The Man City outcast, who hasn’t played a single Premier League minute for Guardiola’s side since 2023, is now running out of options.
