Kalvin Phillips decides on next transfer as Leeds United development emerges

The Leeds United plan to take Kalvin Phillips on a season-long loan next term has been scuppered by their failure to win promotion, according to The Sun.

The report by Anthony Chapman [29 May] claims Phillips is mulling over his overseas options as he looks to reignite his career away from the Premier League.

Phillips is almost certain to leave Manchester City to return to regular football this summer, with Everton also credited with an interest – but just for a loan deal, whilst City would prefer a sale.

Chapman said: “[The move] would have completed an unlikely return to Elland Road, where Phillips still has hero status among fans.

“But the move has now been shelved after Leeds failed to secure a return to the Premier League, and he is believed to be open to the idea of moving abroad.

“He fully accepts his time at Man City is over and that he has no future under Pep Guardiola. The switch has been disastrous, with Phillips beset by injuries and question marks raised over his fitness.”

Kalvin Phillips set to reignite career away from Leeds United

The agonising Wembley defeat for Leeds United by Southampton on Sunday has put the writing on the wall regarding certainty of outgoings like Crysencio Summerville and Wilfried Gnonto, and slimmer chances of incomings of Phillips’ ilk.

It is reported that clubs such as RB Leipzig, Salzburg and Roma are all tracking the availability of the England midfielder, who has been shunned by Gareth Southgate in the past months for his lack of playing time at club level.

Southgate has always been a fan of Phillips in his pomp, and will consider the 28-year-old again should he find a productive move with regular football.

For Phillips, a change of scenery might be just what he needs after a dismal spell at West Ham United, and an emotional return to Elland Road could be more fitting for all parties further down the line.

It is however likely that had Leeds been victorious last weekend, we could be having a different conversation entirely as to whether a switch back home would be beneficial for Phillips.

Ultimately, he needs to be playing at the top level come next season.
