Kalvin Phillips could make ‘sensational’ return to Leeds United

Kalvin Phillips could make a “sensational” return to Leeds United this summer, according to GiveMeSport.

The England midfielder departed Elland Road for Manchester City in July 2022 in a reported £45million deal (Sky Sports).

Phillips struggled to convince Pep Guardiola he could be a regular starter at the Etihad Stadium and he departed for West Ham on loan during the January transfer window.

But the 28-year-old has put in a string of underwhelming performances at the London Stadium and his long-term future remains unclear.

Online outlet GiveMeSport has now reported that sources have shared with them that Phillips could be in line for a “sensational” return to Elland Road.

With the Whites aiming to achieve promotion back to the Premier League this season, the midfielder’s former club could take an interest in him ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Could Kalvin Phillips return to Leeds United?

Not only is it highly unlikely that Daniel Farke would be interested in Phillips, but with Ethan Ampadu, Glen Kamara, Ilia Gruev and Archie Gray at his disposal, Leeds may not be able to afford him.

Reportedly earning £130k p/w, a newly-promoted Leeds side would struggle to make further improvements on their team if they were to bring in the midfielder, especially with any further transfer fee required by Man City.

It has been sad to watch Phillips’ career take a nosedive, having only made 31 appearances for the Premier League champions since July 2022, and most recently, being excluded from the England squad.

The hope of joining West Ham on loan was to gain valuable minutes on the pitch ahead of Euro 2024 in Germany, which kicks off in June, but the 28-year-old has only taken a step backwards at the London Stadium.

He has been slated for his performances, making several mistakes and being sent off during the 2-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Saturday 17 February.

Though fans may like the idea of reuniting with their former star at Elland Road, or at least the player that left the club in 2022, it does not seem like a plausible idea, if Leeds are to claim promotion from the Championship this season.
