Kalvin Phillips close to Leeds United exit to join Manchester City - agent
Agent Rob Segal claims Manchester City are “close” to signing Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips as a “long-term replacement for Fernandinho”.
The Athletic reported on 15 June that sources at both Leeds and Man City feel as though an offer is imminent for the Premier League champions to sign the 26-year-old England international.
Segal is a “super-agent” who’s worked for the YMU Group and PLC agencies and was “credited with discovering Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford”. He now claims that a move across the Pennines is a lot closer than anyone previously thought.
“Leeds United need to sell – that much is obvious. Offloading Raphinha might be enough, but Kalvin Phillips is a strong candidate to go too. He is close to joining Manchester City, I hear,” Segal told CaughtOffside.
He added: “They see him as a long-term replacement for Fernandinho and he’s a player they really like and he has definitely come on leaps and bounds in the last two years.”
If the money’s right…
It will be hard for all Leeds fans to stomach the news that Phillips is leaving.
However, after two brilliant years in the Championship with Marcelo Bielsa, where he was moulded into the deep-lying playmaker he is today, a stunning debut season in the Premier League and a remarkable performance at the Euros, it’s no surprise to see him being on his way.
Phillips is a top-class player who’d get into every single team in the Premier League.
Man City, of course, have Rodri and he’s just had a brilliant season to help the Citizens win the Premier League title.
However, we all know how much of a fan Pep Guardiola is of rotation and with Man City competing for four major honours, there’s no doubt that Phillips will get plenty of game-time.
He’s going to be leaving Mateusz Klich for Kevin De Bruyne, Daniel James for Raheem Sterling and Rodrigo for Erling Haaland.
We can hardly blame him for going, can we?
If Phillips does join City, we’ll wish him all the very best possible.
