Junior Firpo transfer: Leeds United update emerges amid ‘attractive’ claim

Junior Firpo has emerged as an attractive option for one club as his Leeds United contract expires next summer.

The Dominican Republic defender has been a key player this season as Daniel Farke looks for Premier League promotion.

Firpo’s current deal at Elland Road is in its final months, and it remains to be seen whether the Whites will offer him fresh terms before the end of the campaign.

As things stand, the left-back is set to be a free agent next summer, and one team is particularly interested in signing him.

Real Betis want Junior Firpo transfer from Leeds United

Real Betis are interested in bringing the 28-year-old back to Benito Villamarin, according to Sport.

The news outlet reports (19 February) that the defender is an attractive option for the La Liga outfit due to his attacking qualities and past at the Spanish club.

Manuel Pellegrini’s team are looking to possibly replace Ricardo Rodriguez and have the Dominican ace on their radar.

But it has been claimed that the Switzerland international’s departure from Betis will be necessary for them to sign Firpo once his Leeds contract expires.

Junior Firpo future up in the air at Elland Road

The former Barcelona left-back’s continuity seems necessary, with Sam Byram’s future at Elland Road also up in the air.

Isaac Schmidt was one of the Whites’ signings in the summer transfer window, but the Swiss national hasn’t been handed many opportunities this season.

Farke has been reluctant to give the 25-year-old a lot of game time in the current campaign, and as a result, fans haven’t been able to gauge how good he really is.

The Peacocks are leading the Championship and are on course to win automatic promotion to the Premier League if things stay the same.

Farke arguably can’t return to the English top flight without enough quality in his ranks, making Firpo an essential piece of the puzzle.

If the 28-year-old does end up leaving Elland Road, the West Yorkshire outfit should sign a quality left-back to fill the void.

While Byram has done well to cover in the absence of Firpo, the 31-year-old can’t be relied on as the first-choice defender in the Premier League.

Similarly, Schmidt doesn’t seem ready to make the Whites’ first team, making the Dominican an even more valuable asset.
