Junior Firpo contract update emerges at Leeds United ahead of summer transfer window

Leeds United defender Junior Firpo’s future at Elland Road is unlikely to be resolved over the summer, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

The outlet reported on its website on Thursday (13 June) that there is a possibility the Dominican international could leave as a free agent next summer as Daniel Farke is not likely to sanction his sale in January.

Firpo’s current contract with the Whites expires at the end of next season and the left-back could see his future lying away from Elland Road, especially if Farke’s side once again miss out on promotion to the Premier League.

Will Leeds United sell Junior Firpo during the summer transfer window at Elland Road?

It is never ideal for a football club to let players run down their contracts, but now that Leeds United have missed out on promotion to the top flight, they’re going to have to try and find a way to deal with their situation.

Firpo has always divided opinion throughout his time at Elland Road and that was no different in the Championship, but it makes very little sense for the Whites to sell him at a cut price either this summer or in January.

The time has gone for Farke and those behind the scenes at the football club to receive a reasonable fee for his services. While they won’t want to lose such a talented player for nothing, they may well have to if they don’t win promotion next term.

Even then, there is no guarantee that Firpo will be desperate to put pen to paper on new terms. He could feel like a move away is the best option for his career and the Whites may well feel that they could upgrade on him.

Ultimately, anything could happen in 12 months’ time, but at this moment, it seems incredibly unlikely any major decisions will be made over Firpo’s future this summer.
