Journalist moots Leeds United transfer for RB Leipzig midfielder Tyler Adams

MLS journalist David Gass has mooted the possibility of Jesse Marsch wanting RB Leipzig midfielder Tyler Adams at Leeds United,

Adams, 23, is a holding midfielder who’s played for Marsch at both New York Red Bulls and Leipzig.

Gass feels that the USA international doesn’t hold down as solid a spot as he would like in Leipzig’s starting line-up and has suggested that he could look to move on in the summer in order to ensure a spot in his country’s World Cup squad.

“Obviously the moment Jesse Marsch takes over a job, everyone starts talking about Tyler Adams as our producer, Phil, wanted to throw in our rundown as well,” said Gass on the MLS’ Twitter Space on Wednesday [2 March].

“Tyler Adams coming through at New York Red Bulls under Jesse and then playing at Leipzig and being a central part of what Jesse was trying to build in the short time he was there.

“He is not a permanent starter at Leipzig, I do believe he is of that level where he should be and so a move this summer could make sense if he doesn’t feel like he’s in the plans, especially going into a World Cup later this year.”

Makes sense

Kalvin Phillips’ future is going to be a big talking point in the summer and if he goes, someone is going to have to come in to replace him.

Looking at it from a rather basic point of view, Adams could be someone who’s lined up as a replacement.

The 23-year-old has played 28 times in all competitions for Leipzig this season but has been in and out of their side, starting just 10 times in the Bundesliga.

As well as playing as a holding midfielder, he can also play as a centre-back.

Marsch knows him well from spells with him at New York Red Bulls and Leipzig and in 2019, the new Leeds manager spoke highly of the New York-born enforcer.

“He’s a special person, he’s a special personality, he’s a special talent and the ceiling for him is massive,” said Marsch as quoted by Bundesliga’s official website three years ago.

“Massive here in Leipzig and in the Bundesliga and beyond. So I’m proud to be connected with him and to have played a role in his development and I can’t wait to see where he goes from here.”

If Gass is right then Adams could move on this summer in a bid to ensure he’s on the plane to Qatar with the USA team.

And Leeds could definitely pounce upon that opportunity.

In other Leeds United news, one of Leeds’ players appears to have returned from injury as he’s been spotted in first-team training this week.
