Journalist delivers verdict on Kalvin Phillips future as Leeds are linked with new defensive-mid

Leeds United have been linked with Benfica’s defensive midfielder Florentino Luis, leading to questions being asked about the future of Kalvin Phillips.

The 24-year-old is, without doubt, the best and most valuable player in Marcelo Bielsa’s squad and if the Whites do not win promotion this season, it’s likely that the club will be forced into selling the future England international.

Leeds have now been linked with a player who plays in the same role as Phillips though with ESPN reporting that the Yorkshire giants have joined Manchester United, AC Milan and Bayer Leverkusen in the race to sign 20-year-old Florentino.

Of course, winning Florentino’s signature is going to depend on whether or not Leeds get promoted and if they do go up, why would they want the Portugal Under-21 international when they have Phillips in the same role as him?

TeamTalk editor James Marshment was asked whether the interest in Florentino is because of fears of losing Phillips.

The journalist responded on his personal Twitter account that while Phillips and Florentino play in similar roles, he has no concerns about Phillips’ future at Elland Road.

Who would we rather have? A player who is already proven at Leeds, is the most important player in the side, has already mastered Bielsa’s tactics and is wanted by most of the top clubs in England – or an unknown quantity who is good and is likely to be brilliant in the future?

We’d rather stick with Phillips each and every day of the week.
