Josh Sargent makes transfer decision post Leeds United talks

Leeds United have reportedly stepped up their pursuit to bring Norwich City striker Josh Sargent to Elland Road.

Daniel Farke wants a new forward to lead the line despite Joel Piroe’s successful season in the Championship.

Piroe won the Golden Boot by scoring 19 goals in the league in the 2024/25 campaign.

Sargent decides he wants Premier League move

According to Sky Sports (9 June), the Whites have been in talks with Sargent’s representatives over a potential transfer.

Leeds have also contacted the Norwich City hierarchy to explore a move for the 25-year-old forward.

It’s understood that the Championship club will be demanding a £16.85million fee to part ways with the United States international.

Sargent is a record-breaking player after his exploits in the FIFA Under-20 World Cup.

Aged 17, he became the youngest ever American to find the back of the net for his country in the competition’s history.

Leeds United can do better than Sargent this summer

Leeds United, having secured promotion to the Premier League, should avoid signing Sargent due to his unproven track record at the top-flight level and the need for a more accomplished forward to ensure survival and success.

Sargent, a 25-year-old American striker, has shown promise in the Championship with Norwich, scoring 48 goals in 133 appearances.

However, his Premier League record is lacklustre, with only 2 goals in 26 games during Norwich’s 2021/22 season, highlighting his struggle against elite defences.

His 15 goals in 83 matches for Werder Bremen further suggest he lacks the consistent scoring instinct required for the Premier League’s intensity.

The Elland Road outfit need a proven goal-scorer to lead their attack, as their return to the top flight demands immediate impact to avoid relegation.

While Sargent’s work rate and versatility are admirable, his finishing lacks the clinical edge of established strikers.

With funds from promotion, Leeds should target a forward with a stronger top-flight pedigree, capable of delivering 15-20 goals a season, to compete effectively and solidify their Premier League status.
