Joel Piroe red tape emerges as Swansea go back on agreement amid Leeds United transfer interest

Joel Piroe’s move to Leeds has hit some red tape after it emerged Swansea have gone back on an agreement with his representatives, report WalesOnline.

Writing on their official website (23 August), the newspaper report that the 24-year-old is expected to leave the club as he is in the final year of his contract with several clubs including two from Europe interested in his services.

But there could be a hold up for any move after Swansea went back on an agreement with the player and his reps about their cut of any deal that saw him leave the club following the exit of chief executive Julian Winter.

Leeds United

“Leeds United have stepped up their pursuit of Swansea City striker Joel Piroe this week, WalesOnline understands,” they wrote.

“Southampton, under the guidance of the Dutchman’s former boss Russell Martin, remain in the picture, while Sheffield United are one of the most recent sides to have made enquiries. Meanwhile, two European sides have also entered the fray in the last week or so.

“However, getting a move over the line could yet prove problematic given the current stand-off between the Swans and Piroe’s representatives, which at the time of writing still hasn’t been solved.

“Piroe’s camp are unhappy at the terms of a sale being offered by the Swans, having negotiated a potential package with former chief executive Julian Winter back in January, with fees and other one-off payments seemingly a key part of discussions. However, following Winter’s departure, it’s claimed the club have gone back on that agreement.”

Ouch

Leeds know all about behind-the-scenes issues in regards to transfers after this summer, so this should come as no surprise really.

A number of players have made it clear they want to leave Elland Road this summer and lots have, but not everyone got their wish and it has led to some issues that have leaked over into the season.

Piroe’s issues are clearly very well known and until they’re solved it’s possible that the player opts to stay at Swansea for another year and just see out his contract before having his pick of clubs next summer.

Swansea obviously won’t want that, especially with a potential £15m windfall in their eyesight if they can agree a deal with Leeds to sell him, but this isn’t something that Leeds can control right now.

With a little over a week remaining in the window the hope is that the club are prepared for all situations and if a deal can’t be reached, we’re able to pivot quickly and ensure we get someone through the door to bolster Daniel Farke’s squad.
