Joel Piroe exit to require ‘major shift’ at Leeds as Rangers chase late loan deal

Joel Piroe’s exit from Leeds United is still looking unlikely this window.

Harry Wilson was the talking point of the latter stages of the summer transfer window, and while rumours still circulate around his potential move to Elland Road, the winter window is focused elsewhere.

Jorgen Strand Larsen’s future is the biggest talking point now, with Leeds still firmly in the race to sign him before the deadline on 2 February.

However, his next move could prove to be decisive when it comes to the future of Piroe, who has been linked with a move to Rangers.

Graham Smyth dumbfounded by Joel Piroe reports

Piroe isn’t a regular starter at Leeds, and it would take a chain of unfortunate events for that to be the case at Elland Road.

However, as of right now, he is one of just two fit strikers at Leeds United, with Lukas Nmecha currently sidelined with an injury.

That alone is enough to cast doubt over the validity of a move away from Elland Road, but also the fact that Daniel Farke utilises two strikers from the get-go in most games.

A recent report has claimed that Rangers are closing in on a loan deal for Piroe, though Graham Smyth believes that is unlikely given the current situation.

Writing via X, he said: “Would take a major shift in the player’s stance and Leeds’. They haven’t got a nine in, and Lukas Nmecha is out with another niggle.”

With that said, an exit can’t be ruled out, but that seems dependent on whether Leeds can sign a replacement in time.

Daniel Farke decision showcases why Piroe exit may still happen

The fact that Piroe has started just two Premier League games for Leeds this season speaks volumes about his importance in the squad.

However, so does the fact that he hasn’t made it off the bench in six of the last eight league matches for the Whites, with Farke deciding to utilise other options instead.

Despite being one of only three natural strikers at the club, Piroe is arguably fifth or even sixth choice for that position when taking into account the likes of Willy Gnonto and Noah Okafor, both of whom have been utilised in that area.

The uncertainty over his future is likely to rumble on until the final minutes of the transfer window, with 7pm on Monday the last time clubs can seal any business.
