Ruben Selles has left the door open to extend Joe Gelhardt's loan move from Leeds United in the summer.

Gelhardt will spend the rest of the season on loan at Hull City after finalising a transfer on Wednesday (15 January), but the agreement does not include an option for the Tigers to extend the deal [Beren Cross].

However, Selles has revealed that the Championship club may have "another conversation" about keeping the 22-year-old forward at the MKM Stadium at the end of the season.

"First of all, we need to see how the cooperation works and what we want from each other", Selles told BBC Humberside Sport (16 January).

"Hopefully, when we arrive into the summer, we are in a good place, he has made the things that we expect him to do with the team and then, we can have another conversation about that.

"So, that will mean we're in a good place."

Joe Gelhardt surely done at Leeds United after Ruben Selles reveal

From Selles' words, it appears that Hull City would have insisted on including a buy option in their deal to take Gelhardt on loan had they had no reservations about the forward.

However, having seen the 22-year-old be left on the fringes of Daniel Farke's Leeds United squad, Selles probably wants to assess him before committing to a longer deal.

If a relegation-battling club like the Tigers are having reservations about Gelhardt, there is no doubt that his time at Elland Road has surely ended.

It would be a surprise if the West Yorkshire outfit did not offload the Liverpool-born striker at the end of the season, having seen his development hit a snag.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke does not favour Joe Gelhardt.

As for Gelhardt, he will be hopeful of impressing Selles and earning himself a longer contract in Hull instead of looking for another club in the summer.

It remains to be seen if he can help Selles and Co steer away from the relegation zone before now and the end of the season.
