Joe Gelhardt ‘set to leave’ Leeds United in triple exit at Elland Road

Joe Gelhardt looks set to depart Leeds United after his Elland Road career failed to live up to early potential.

The forward joined the Yorkshire outfit from Wigan Athletic in 2020 and showed promise in front of goal.

However, after loan spells with Sunderland and Hull City, the 23-year-old appears to be on his way out of the newly promoted side, with two years remaining on his current contract.

Gelhardt will likely not be the only player departing Leeds, with two more names believed to be following him out of the exit door.

Gelhardt one of several Leeds players expected to leave

After clinching the Championship title by a whisker on the final day, Daniel Farke and co must build a squad equipped for the Premier League.

The German’s position had been cast into doubt, but he has been given public reassurances about his future at Elland Road.

As well as incomings, Farke must make decisions on his current crop, and it seems that several will depart this summer.

Sam Greenwood, Darko Gyabi, and Gelhardt could leave Leeds, according to Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Joe Donnohue (2 June).

He states that the trio will be allowed to leave if the offer is right, with sources indicating that around £3- 4million should be enough for each.

That type of figure is not thought to be a problem for most Championship sides, while there is also interest from abroad.

Leeds to make correct call on Gelhardt, Greenwood, and Gyabi

Gelhardt, Greenwood, and Gyabi all spent time away from Elland Road this season as they were not deemed capable of impacting Farke’s first team.

With that in mind, it seems fair that their futures lie away from the Premier League club.

Greenwood still has something to offer the second tier after respectable loans with Middlesbrough and Preston North End.

As for Gyabi, he suffered relegation with Plymouth Argyle, but did benefit from a regular starting place.

Gelhardt is a team player and has worked hard during his loans over the years, but he is not Premier League class.

With the trio set to leave Leeds, there will likely be a host of Championship teams interested in their services, with added funds welcome too.
