Joe Gelhardt issue emerges for Leeds as big-money clause triggered

Leeds United man Joe Gelhardt was unable to help loan club Hull City as they fell to a 1-0 defeat to relegation rivals Derby on Saturday.

The Tigers sit in the relegation zone with just one game remaining, and could be destined for an unwanted League One return even if they beat Portsmouth on the final day.

Gelhardt proved his worth for Hull when he scored a brace in a potentially vital 2-1 win over Preston on Easter Monday.

However, the forward remains out of favour with Leeds, who will look to cash in on his services in the summer.

Premier League clause hands Leeds fresh Gelhardt headache

Gelhardt made just two Championship appearances for Daniel Farke’s men this season before joining Hull on loan.

Since joining up with Ruben Selles’ side, he has scored five goals in 19 second-tier outings, showing what he can offer when he is given game time.

According to The Sun (27 April, Pg 53), Gelhardt will automatically receive a pay rise thanks to the Whites’ promotion due to a Premier League clause in his contract.

That clause may put Hull off from acquiring the forward’s loan services once more, regardless of their relegation struggles.

Gelhardt clause could hinder Leeds’ summer transfer activity

After clinching promotion back to the Premier League via their 6-0 win over Stoke on Easter Monday, the Elland Road club are now vying to beat Burnley to the Championship title.

Leeds will return to the top of the league with a win on Monday

The Clarets now sit top of the table after their comprehensive victory over Queens Park Rangers on Saturday, but Farke’s men can reclaim first place if they beat Bristol City on Monday 28 April.

But as Leeds prepare to compete in the Premier League next season, the West Yorkshire giants must have a successful transfer window.

The Whites will be looking to add proven top-flight quality to their ranks ahead of next campaign, but they will have to facilitate some player exits to make that happen.

While Gelhardt remains out of favour at Elland Road, his departure would be an obvious one to sanction.

However, his Premier League pay rise clause could hinder Leeds as they look to find a suitor for the 22-year-old.
