Joe Gelhardt exit from Leeds United on the cards if Elland Road development takes place

Joe Gelhardt has been named among the players who could quit Leeds United this summer if the Yorkshire club is relegated, according to The Telegraph.

The newspaper reports that Raphinha, Kalvin Phillips, Illan Meslier and Patrick Bamford are among the players at Leeds who’ve proven their Premier League class and could be lined up to leave Elland Road should the Whites return to the Championship.

Worryingly, 20-year-old striker Gelhardt has also been mentioned with The Telegraph reporting: “It would be foolish to think clubs would not look at picking some of them off when the window opens, should Leeds find themselves in the Championship.”

The Telegraph adds that Leeds have a number of players with relegation release clauses in their contracts at Elland Road.

Not Joffy

If Leeds do get relegated from the Premier League and someone swoops in to sign England striker Bamford, who’s going to benefit from that?

Unless the Whites go out and sign a big-money replacement, the obvious name that comes to your head is Gelhardt.

If there’s anyone who could probably do with a loan spell away from Leeds after the season they’ve had, it’s Gelhardt.

While it’s unlikely that he’d be a regular starter for most Premier League clubs, he’d definitely be good enough for a team in the Championship.

And that makes us think that if we do go down and Bamford is sold, ex-Wigan youngster Gelhardt could be our starting striker.

As a result, selling him wouldn’t make any sense from his point of view or Leeds’ because if he does join another Premier League club, he wouldn’t get as much game-time unless he’s loaned straight back out.

Gelhardt is showing a lot of promise and we do wish he’d played more than he has done this season with Marcelo Bielsa and Jesse Marsch both under-utilising the talented 20-year-old.

Let’s hope that doesn’t lead to him wanting to move away.

In other Leeds United news, there’s a major issue on the cards for the 49ers’ takeover and Andrea Radrizzani might have to re-negotiate a deal.
