Jamie Shackleton undergoes Sheffield United medical with Leeds United exit imminent

Jamie Shackleton’s Leeds United exit and summer transfer to Sheffield United are expected to be confirmed on Thursday 4 July, according to Graham Smyth.

The Yorkshire Evening Post journalist reported on Thursday (4 July) that the 24-year-old completed his medical with the Whites’ Yorkshire rivals on Wednesday (3 July) after his contract at Elland Road expired.

Shackleton’s move to Bramall Lane has long been planned, but the Blades’ takeover had previously held up the deal which is now expected to be confirmed in the coming hours.

Leeds were understood to be keen to keep the versatile academy product at Elland Road this summer [Leeds Live, 7 June] having offered him new terms after they missed out on promotion back to the Premier League.

Will Jamie Shackleton exit Leeds United as Sheffield United eye summer transfer?

Shackleton’s move to Bramall Lane has become one of the worst-kept secrets in the footballing world with a number of media outlets reporting that the the 24-year-old would be heading across Yorkshire this summer.

The Whites may well have been keen to keep him this summer, but the promise of more regular first-team minutes at Sheffield United would have made it easier to turn down a new contract extension with his boyhood club.

Ultimately, it may not be the worst news for Leeds United either as it means they will have got another wage off of their books as they look to rebuild Daniel Farke’s midfield following the sale of Archie Gray to Tottenham.

The German was never the biggest fan of Shackleton and very rarely utilised him in his starting XI during his first season at Elland Road and that seemed unlikely to change even if he did pen new terms this summer.

Hopefully, he will go on to be a success with the Blades but Leeds supporters will hope that the Whites don’t live to regret their decision to allow him to depart for nothing this summer.
